Four FC Elk Grove Teams One Win Away from State Titles
Posted
April 24, 2012
(Elk Grove, Calif.) -- The best of youth soccer will be on display on FC Elk Grove’s home fields in Elk Grove at Bartholomew Sports Park (BSP) this weekend, as the top teams from Northern California will be competing for state titles and the right to advance to U.S. Regional events in Denver and Phoenix later this summer.
The top California Youth Soccer Association (CYSA) U14-19 teams will travel to Elk Grove this weekend for the culmination of their seasons. The girls teams in the U14-19 age groups will hold their finals on Saturday, the u14-19 boys teams on Sunday. FC Elk Grove has four teams playing in this weekend’s finals, more than any other club in Northern California:
· FC Elk Grove 96 Girls Orange (U16) is playing the Stanford (Palo Alto) Typhoons in the President’s Cup Final on Saturday, April 28 at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at BSP #3.
· FC Elk Grove 94 Girls (U18) is taking on the Central Valley (San Jose) Flames in the State Cup Final on Saturday, April 28 at noon at BSP #2
· FC Elk Grove 97 Boys (U15) play Porterville United in the President’s Cup final on Sunday, April 29 at 1 p.m. at BSP 2
· FC Elk Grove 96 Boys (U16) play Mission San Francisco Chivas on Sunday, April 29 at 10:30 a.m. at BSP 3 for the President’s Cup title.
“It is very rewarding to see the commitment and dedication of our players, coaches and the families that support them coming together to produce great results,” Cesar Plasencia, FC Elk Grove’s Director of Coaching, said. “The coaches and players deserve the credit for the success of our program on the field and for creating excitement about soccer in our community.”
FC Elk Grove has already taken home state championships in the U12 and U11 girls divisions, and Association Cup Championships in U9 and U14 boys divisions and the U13 girls division.
In addition to state success, FC Elk Grove is making a mark internationally. A team of seven under 16 FC Elk Grove girls won the national Adidas UEFA Young Champions title in Portland, Ore. on April 15 and will represent the United States at the world finals of the 5v5 UEFA Young Champions tournament in Munich, Germany. FC Elk Grove’s team will travel to Germany May 14-20 to compete against European finalists, train at Bayern Munich’s world-class soccer facilities and attend the men’s and women’s Champions League finals.
FC Elk Grove is the competitive soccer program of the Elk Grove Youth Soccer League (EGYSL) and serves kids throughout the greater Elk Grove community. FC Elk Grove has 64 teams in the U9-19 age groups and more than 800 players. The program is led by Director of Coaching Cesar Plasencia.
Elk Grove Youth Soccer League provides soccer programs for all levels of ability and has nearly 6,000 participants in the U8-19 age groups. More information is available at www.fcelkgrove.com and www.elkgrove-soccer.com.
FC Elk Grove Wins UEFA Young Champions
Posted
April 16, 2012
If you’ve followed FC Elk Grove lately, you’ve heard these words a lot: UEFA Young Champions . . . Portland . . .Munich . . Champions!
A contingent of 21 FC Elk Grove players in the U13 Boys, U16 Boys and U16 Girls age groups travelled to Portland April 13 to play in the Adidas UEFA Young Champions Challenge, a national 5v5 tournament. The players were treated to a professional experience playing in JELD-WEN Field, the home of the Major League Soccer's Portland Timbers. Four 30 yard by 40 yard fields were laid out on one of the very best artificial turf fields in the world for the competition. The players used the locker rooms like the pros and professional staff we there to provide event management, first aid needs and everything else need for a great event.
With the stadium scoreboards running the scores live, FC Elk Grove, the lone club from Northern California, had its teams play three preliminary games on Saturday, with our teams taking on well-known clubs such as West Coast FC, Washington’s Eastside club, Carlsbad and LA Premier.
The two boys teams went 1-2 on the opening day, playing very well in the tough, fast-paced, 5v5 game. The girls went 2-1, including a 9-1 outburst in the final game to win a tiebreaker that put them in the semi-finals the next day.
Saturday night, the teams ate dinner together and watched the Portland Timbers on big screens before the boys headed to a movie, and the to girls ice baths and an early curfew in preparation for Sunday morning’s semi-final game.
The Sunday semi-final match pitted the FC Elk Grove U16 girls against Carlsbad, who had downed our girls 6-4 the previous day and had won all their other matches by a combined score of 19-0. In a terrific match, FC Elk Grove, fell down 0-1 before scoring two goals, one in the final seconds to move on to the finals.
In the finals, FC Elk Grove U16 girls faced off with LA Premier FC . An early 3-1 lead by FC Elk Grove shrunk to 3-2, then 4-2 and finally 4-3 as FC Elk Grove’s 96 Girls came from the #4 seed to win the UEFA Young Champions title and an Adidas-sponsored trip to Munich, Germany where they will represent the United States against European team and attend both the men’s and women’s Champions League finals.
While this event was certainly memorable for the 21 who could go, they represented the best of FC Elk Grove and did so with class and enthusiasm. Their conduct off the field and success on it elevated the program to a national and international stage and opened up new opportunities for other players and teams to attend future special events.
The FC Elk Grove representatives were:
U13 Boys: RJ Moorhouse, Samuel Dadzie, Antonio Welch, Mauricio Ochoa, Ricky Uribe, Trent Slagle, Omari Fontes, Coach Troy Fontes

Stephanie Cox Hosts FC Elk Grove Clinic
Posted
December 22, 2011
U.S. Women’s National team member Stephanie Cox spent time before the holidays with FC Elk Grove, running a clinic for 50 or so excited girls players from her home town.
Cox, a veteran National Team member with 77 caps, was hand-on with the FC Elk Grove players, participating in the training and small-sided games and sharing tips and technical advice.
In addition to leading the training, Stephanie conducted a Q&A with the players and talked about the importance of grades and a well-rounded athletic experience. Stephanie was a 4.17 student at Elk Grove High School and played both basketball and volleyball as she followed her soccer dreams.
FC Elk Grove and all the players in attendance thank Stephanie for being a great example and for her willingness to give back to her soccer community.
